Yamaha YZ490 1979 classic dirt bike $600
Nicknamed “The Widowmaker,” this classic black and yellow Yamaha dirt bike is built to go fast. It also has a lot of low-end torque when you need it. I bought it in 1983 when I was a novice rider because I liked the fact that I could go up almost anything in any gear. I did not have to be “on the pipe” like you do with smaller engines. After ten or twenty rides I got involved in other things and lost interest in riding – so it has been garaged the whole time. I started it up periodically to keep it running but then after a while I lost interest in that, too. So it has not been started in about ten years. It probably needs an oil change, tune-up, and possibly a carburetor cleaning. The bike itself is extremely clean. There’s hardly a speck of dirt on it. I cleaned it for a photo shoot with a world-class artist who has painted it on canvas. This bike is almost too good-looking to be a dirt bike. It is fully registered in California as “non-operational”. It has an approved spark arrestor, which I affixed – the original bike did not have one. So you are good to go at any motorcycle park in California. It has a large “desert” gas tank installed and comes with the smaller original tank. It has good tires, a new clutch, a new muffler (exhaust pipe). It’s a fun ride and a good bike for someone who likes to bring an old classic back to life. If you buy it, you will have to come pick it up or arrange for delivery. I live in Culver City (Los Angeles) CA.
